Research by the Essentia Health Heart & Vascular Center has given patients access to the latest therapies, including new cholesterol medications, device implants and surgical procedures. In fact, the first drug-coated stent to be implanted in Duluth occurred as part of our research program at the former SMDC Heart & Vascular Center. More than 1,800 patients have taken part in cardiac studies since such research began in the early 1990s at the Duluth Clinic and SMDC Health System, which are now part of Essentia Health.

Our research staff and physicians collaborate to determine whether patients will benefit by participating in a clinical trial. Patients who meet the eligibility guidelines are invited to begin the clinical trial after completing a formal consent process with our research team.
