Essentia Institute of Rural Health

Better Health for Rural Communities

The Essentia Institute of Rural Health provides clinical, translational and health services research and educational opportunities.

The institute's strengths include access to Essentia Health's large rural patient population. Its organized group practice network covers a 2 million-person service area, of which approximately 40 percent are Essentia Health patients. The institute is well-positioned to grow in the area of rural health research.

An electronic data warehouse holding health information from sources across Essentia Health provides an important foundation for conducting research and ultimately, improving the health and well-being of rural populations.

With its strong educational component, the institute provides clinical activities for physician and pharmacy residents as well as medical and health sciences students. It also offers a continuing medical education program for practicing physicians, nurses, practitioners, and pharmacists.

The institute's predecessor was the Duluth Clinic's Division of Education and Research. You can download its annual report (PDF).
