About Essentia Health-St. Mary’s Medical Center
St. Mary’s Medical Center has been providing quality, compassionate health care to residents of northern Minnesota, northern Wisconsin and upper Michigan since 1888. St. Mary’s Medical Center operates 380 beds, 46 bassinets, and has 6 intensive care units including neonatal and pediatric units. St. Mary’s Medical Center is a level 2 trauma center and has a care team that includes hospitalists, medical critical care intensivists, trauma-surgical critical care intensivists, pediatric intensivists and neonatal intensivists. St. Mary’s Medical Center has a fully electronic medical record (Epic) along with provider order entry.
Essentia Health employs 11,500 and serves patients in Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota and Idaho.
About Essentia Health-St. Mary’s Medical Center Pharmacy Services
St. Mary’s Medical Center Acute Care Pharmacy Services employs approximately 30 clinical pharmacists, 1 pediatric clinical specialist, and 30 pharmacy technicians. Pharmacy services are decentralized to nearly all areas of the hospital including the operating room and the emergency department. Pharmacists work collaboratively with other care providers to provide order verification, warfarin and argatroban dosing, pharmacokinetic dosage adjustment, renal dose adjustment, IV to PO conversion, total parenteral nutrition management, antibiotic stewardship, medication reconciliation, Code Blue response and geriatric dosage adjustment.
Program History
The Essentia Health-St. Mary's Medical Center Pharmacy Practice Residency Program started in 2004 as a collaborative effort between SMDC Health System and the University of Minnesota-Duluth College of Pharmacy. This program is accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists.
Vision Statement
Pharmacists completing this residency will be confident and competent members of the healthcare team. These pharmacists will possess the expertise to effectively communicate pertinent drug information and educate others on drug-related topics. They will be committed to providing excellent patient-centered pharmaceutical care across the healthcare continuum.
Leadership and commitment to the profession will be demonstrated by identifying opportunities to advance the practice of pharmacy and to implement the changes envisioned. Participants in this residency will recognize and honor the Essentia Health values of hospitality, stewardship, respect, justice, teamwork and quality and will treat every person with dignity and compassion.
A pharmacist completing this residency will be prepared to assume a clinical staff position in an acute care setting. These pharmacists will be qualified to serve as adjunct faculty for a college of pharmacy or to pursue second year post-graduate training in a focused area of practice.
